R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It provides various statistical (linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, …) and graphical techniques. It is highly extensible.

R is available as a Free/Libre Software under the Free Software Foundation’s GNU General Public License in source code form. It compiles and runs on Windows, macOS, UNIX platforms, and similar systems (including FreeBSD and Linux).

FOSSEE, IIT Bombay has taken the initiative of promoting FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) for education. We, the R team at FOSSEE, IIT Bombay, promote the use of R. This project aims to enable students and faculty members of various colleges/institutes/universities across India to use Free/Libre and Open Source Software tools for all their research and project work. Thus, improving the quality of learning and avoiding expensive commercial computing software licenses for research and education.
