Resources to learn R language

  • Click here to download R.

  • Click here to download RStudio.

  • To start learning R, refer to the spoken tutorials on R

  • Click here to download the completed R Textbook Companion (TBC) code.

Screening Task

NOTE: This task has been divided into two parts. It is mandatory to complete both the parts as described below for this screening task to be considered as completed.

For your submission to be considered, the participants have to complete both the parts, namely R Textbook Companion (Part A) and Data Collection and Analysis (Part B).

Details of Part A

Objective: To complete one R Textbook Companion (TBC).

Procedure

  1. Familiarize yourself with R programming language. Resources can be accessed by clicking here

  2. Read more about TBC by clicking here  Please read the instructions given on this page very carefully.

  3. Read coding guidelines by clicking here. Any submission violating these guidelines will not be accepted/ approved.

  4. Create an account on R - FOSSEE and sign in by using your credentials.

  5. Submit a book proposal by clicking here. Please upload at least five sample code in the proposal. You will not be able to access this page without having a valid account on R - FOSSEE.

  6. Ensure that the proposed book is not in Completed Books or Books in Progress

  7. Make sure that the proposed book has at least 80 solved examples which can be coded. (Please choose a textbook for which R code is not already available. If a book already has R code, do NOT select that book).

  8. Wait for 24-72 hours to know whether your proposal is accepted. The decisions will be emailed to you.

  9. If the proposal is accepted, proceed to complete the TBC as soon as possible.

  10. If the proposal is not accepted, you may submit another book proposal.

Please note that the TBC project runs throughout the year. So, we allow a candidate to finish one TBC within a span of three months, given he/she has other commitments. However, as this has been floated as a screening task (Part A) for FOSSEE Summer Fellowship, we expect the candidates to finish this faster. That's why we suggest you submit a book proposal and start coding (after your proposal is approved). Even If not selected for the fellowship, you are still eligible for the Textbook Campanion project certificate and honorarium upon successful completion and submission of the codes. The honorarium amount depends on the quality and complexity of the code.

Procedure to submit Part A:

  1. Please save all the codes in one folder. Prepare a  zip file. Suppose student XYZ is submitting the part A folder. Please name it as XYZ_partA_TBC_Codes.zip  and submit it here using your login.

  2. Please submit all the TBC codes on the website https://r.fossee.in/. Please follow the procedure for submitting the TBC code as per the procedure mentioned here.

Evaluation Criteria for Part A:

  1. Number of code submitted.

  2. Accuracy of submitted code.

  3. The complexity of the submitted code.

Details of  Part B (Data Collection and Analysis)

  1. In this task, each participant will be asked to collect socially relevant data. Apart from this, the participant has to analyze the collected data using the R programming language.

  2. Note: Part B might be modified or changed, as per the requirements of the FOSSEE project. Thus, we encourage the participants to finish Task A as soon as possible. Please keep visiting here for the latest updates.
